Level : SCQF level 10

Semester: 2

Planned timetable: To be arranged.

Children's books are shaped by the pedagogical and political concerns of adults; as such, they are an excellent introduction to Russian twentieth and twenty-first century cultural policy. We will explore how children's literature mirrors society and aims to influence it. Three main thematic areas will be studied: socially-responsible literature; criminality and reform; classics and curricula. The module will involve close reading and the study of institutions that shape the canon: publishers, schools, censors, libraries, journals, the market, the state, the church, and the Internet. In addition to reading the selected texts, students will research their own material online by reading and presenting on magazines and journals published by the Russian State Children's Library Archive.
