This module serves as a high-level introduction to Spanish love lyric in the Early Modern period. It charts what one might term the (r)evolutions in amatory poetry throughout the Renaissance and Baroque periods via some of the finest poets of the age. You will begin with a firm grounding in Petrarch, the rise and circulation of Petrarchist poetics, and the key debates in Neoplatonism that spread throughout Europe and beyond, which underpinned much of the love lyric of the period. The poets who follow fit within one of the three broad camps that appear in the subtitle: perilous, provocative, and parodic. You will consider the rise of the love sonnet and the national figure of Garcilaso de la Vega, engage with research-led teaching on Juan Boscßn's move away from courtly poetics and Francisco de Aldana's move towards physicality, as well as the parodic lyric of Catalina Clara RamÝrez de G·zman and Lope de Vega's fictional TomÚ de Burguillos.
