This module considers how the Spanish Civil War has been represented in culture over time, from contemporary literary responses to the testimonial writings of post-war exiles and the fictional representations of subsequent generations. Students will explore such issues as the tensions between culture and politics (propaganda, censorship, etc.), the reliability of memory texts, the 'memory boom' in recent Spanish fiction and post-memory. A selection of literary texts and film will be studied.
