Planned timetable:
This module is intended to provide an introduction to the philosophical thought of the Western middle ages through an examination of central themes in the work of its greatest figures, such as Aquinas. The course will begin with an outline of the historical, cultural and intellectual context of the 13th century, noting such important developments as the reception of Aristotelian thought from the Arab world and the rise of the universities. It will then provide an account of central metaphysical concepts, such as substance/accident; form/matter, actuality/potentiality; being/essence; and then show how these are put to use in the areas of philosophical theology, philosophies of mind and language, and theory of value.
