This module will offer a rich and varied graduate-level introduction to the political theory and intellectual history of the early modern period. There will be an emphasis upon English-speaking examples but always set within the context of broader European developments. Particular themes will be explored through the study of key texts and will include explanations of the relationship between state and society, theories of legitimacy and political obligation, accounts of the origins of government, and emerging interest in specific aspects of governmental activity.
