History is a matter of time - and space. While a certain preoccupation with time has been characteristic for large parts of modern European historiography, space has very often been a hidden dimension in history. Over the last years, however, there has been a growing interest in the spatial dimension of European history and a grown concern with the 'sense of place'. Concepts of place, space, boundary, territory and landscape have become central to some of the most exciting developments across the whole field of the humanities and social sciences. This module aims to elucidate these multifaceted concepts, and offers an insight in various aspects of modern European 'spatial history': e.g. geopolitics, (mental) maps and places of memory.
