This module will introduce students to law and legal change during the Central Middle Ages (c.1050 - c.1250). This was a formative era for the Western legal tradition which saw the development of highly sophisticated conceptions of law that have had a lasting influence on the shape of modern jurisprudence. By focusing on five discrete bodies of law which emerged alongside and in conversation with each other, this module will provide a forum to explore the medieval ideas of law, its practice, and the roles it played in society.
