This module provides an introduction to Italian literature and language of the Cinquecento, primarily through the works of Castiglione, Machiavelli and Ariosto. Extracts of other works will be read in relation to the Questione della lingua, and the development of literary models and courtly culture in Renaissance Italy. The literary, social and political background will be introduced through close study of the texts.
