This module will analyse the various challenges to the concept of international security since the end of the Cold War, facilitate critical thinking about the changing meaning of security as it relates to different modes of theoretical analysis, and critically analyse the re-emergence of an emphasis on security as the threat and use of force since 11 September 2001.

Learning and teaching methods and delivery

Weekly contact: 1 x 1-hour lecture (x 10 weeks), 1 x 1-hour tutorial (x 10 weeks), 2 consultation hours with Coordinator (x 12 weeks). 2 hours examination feedback in week 1 of following semester.

Intended learning outcomes

• provide students with an understanding of the environmental discourse as well as an overview of the main wicked problem issues that shape current debates;
• allow students to analyse (and compare in different settings) unique and characteristic features in environmental problem-solving;
• help students identify relevant concepts, ideologies, actors and political contexts involved in environmental politics;
• make students aware of the shared as well as setting-specific dilemmas in environmental politics and policy;
• and help students evaluate the link (or rather: gap) between environmental policy intentions and reality.
