This module will examine some of the most important ethical questions in contemporary world politics against the background of more general debates in ethics and political theory. Its objectives are: (1) to allow students to develop a knowledge of the complexities and problematics of contemporary ethical and theoretical debate as they impact upon questions of world politics and (2) to develop a thorough account of the major ethical dilemmas of contemporary world politics. The module begins with a discussion of some of the major competing ethical approaches to world politics (cosmopolitan, realist, sceptical and critical) and then moves on to a focus on issues such as the use of force, justice, environmental concerns, and the character and possible evolution of the state as the central actor in world politics. It will close with a consideration of the importance of questions of character and virtue in world politics.
