The module builds on students' familiarity with pedagogical grammar to introduce them to theoretical linguistics as applied to modern German. Students will encounter the 'levels' of language, e.g. phonetics and phonology, including the International Phonetic Alphabet; syntax, both as word order and how words combine with each other; lexis, the structure of German vocabulary; semantics, the study of meaning and its relation to form; pragmatics, the study of language use.
