This module will study selected primary texts (Aristophanes and/or Menander) and major critical issues in the field of Classical Athenian Comedy (Old and/or New). The topics to be covered will be chosen from areas of literary, theatrical, historical and broader cultural interest bearing on the status and development of comic drama in the fifth and fourth centuries, including the relationship of comedy to the political, social and ethical values of the Athenian polis. The course will bring together close linguistic study of Greek texts and engagement with larger concerns arising from current and recent scholarship.
