FR4110   Translating French Opera

Academic year(s): 2018-2019

Key information

SCOTCAT credits : 15

ECTS credits : 7

Level : SCQF level 10

Semester: 2

Availability restrictions: Not automatically available to General Degree students

Planned timetable: To be arrranged.

Students will translate the libretto for Gluck’s Paris version of his opera Orphée et Eurydice (1774) into contemporary English. The results will form the basis for the English text to be used in a staged production of the work by the student Opera Society in October 2019. Key methodological decisions will be taken by the group in consultation with the opera director. Issues to be addressed include comprehension, accuracy, translation loss, modernization, stressed and unstressed syllables and the desirability (or not) of humour. At the end of the module there will also be a sung recital featuring our translations. Musical expertise is welcome but not essential.
