FR4110 Translating French Opera

SCOTCAT credits:15
Academic year(s):2014/5
SCQF Level 10
Planned timetable:To be arrranged.

Students will translate Guillard's libretto for Gluck's opera Iphigénie en Tauride (1778) from French to (modern) English. The results will form the basis for the English text to be used in a staged production of the work by St Andrews Opera in June 2015. Key methodological decisions will be taken by the group at the beginning of the semester, and students will be encouraged to draw on weekly group discussions when making decisions about their own version of the translation. The results will be collective at their core but varied at the level of detail. Musical expertise is welcome but not essential.
