The module is designed to consolidate playwriting skills gained in Writing for Performance 1 (EN5105) and to introduce writing for the radio and for the screen. Seminars continue to build on both the technical aspects of writing a play or screenplay such as dialogue, characterization, image structure, and dramatic action. Additionally, metaphor, the individual voice of the playwright / screenwriter and the ambition and reach of the contemporary play or film in the wider context are all discussed and explored using core texts and secondary reading. Dramaturgy sessions allow students' work to be read aloud, explored, developed, and experienced in a group setting.

Weekly contact: 2 hours of seminars (X11 weeks), 2 hours of dramaturgy (X11 weeks), 4 consultation hours (on average as required) over the semester.

As used by St Andrews: Coursework = 100% ( Radio play of 15 mins (around 3000 words) with accompanying reflective commentary (1000 words), a 2000 word synopsis and a screenplay of 30 minutes (around 4000-6000 words). )”
