This module is designed to allow students to acquaint themselves with some of the principal novels of the period 1720-1840 together with the social background from which they derive. It will show the development of the novel form from its earliest stages to its establishment as the dominant literary form in the nineteenth century. It forms part of the critical and historical study of literature available to students in the School and the Faculty. (Group C)
