This module will compare writing about the experience of exile (real and imagined) by writers of different centuries, languages and cultures. We will consider the particular historical and political circumstances in each case, and how this intersects with the conceptualization and literary expression of the experience of exile by each writer, and examine literary points of contact, commonality and difference. All works will be read in English translation. Texts will be drawn from a range of languages including Arabic, French, German, Italian, Latin, Persian and Spanish, and genres which may include poetry, the novel, the short story, the graphic novel and film.
