The aim of this module is to introduce students to the concepts involved in computational astrophysics. From a general introduction to a current programming language (Fortran90), students are shown how to explore the basics of problem solving using numerical techniques and their application to astrophysical phenomena. The second part of the module involves the development of a numerical integrator to solve orbits in various gravitational potentials. Students then gain experience with the basics of numerical accuracy, and explore the dynamics of orbits in gene ralised gravitational potentials from planetary to Galactic systems.
