This module explores the work of some of the most significant Fannanat, Arab women artists and intellectuals and their contribution to Modern and contemporary Arab cultures. The module will focus on four main media of artistic expression and cultural significance: poetry, fiction, film and non-fictional writing (essay, article, autobiographical writing). The main aims of the module are to consolidate the students' knowledge of modern standard Arabic, and to enhance their active use of it (through speaking and writing). The module is also designed to develop the students' analytical and critical skills of texts and films as they become acquainted with the contribution of women to modern Arab culture and society. All written primary sources will be in Arabic (films will be in Arabic with subtitles), secondary sources will be either in Arabic or in English. Oral presentations and the oral exam will be in Arabic, in-class discussions and written work will be either in Arabic or in English.
