This module explores cultural aspects of the modern Arab world based on the works of some of the most influential Arab writers, intellectuals, critics, visual artists and filmmakers of the last two hundred years. The module is designed to improve and broaden students' knowledge of Arabic and the modern Arab world while also including a cultural component. Students will be required to read passages of Arabic texts from various genres and to watch films in Arabic (with subtitles). In-class discussions based on secondary readings in English will help provide an understanding of the cultural and socio-political dimensions of the contemporary Arab world. All presentations and written work will be in Arabic.

Weekly contact: 2-hour seminar (x 9 weeks), 2 hours of compulsory film viewing (x 2 weeks) and 1 surgery hour.
