This module will examine the development of history writing in Greece: from Hecataeus of Miletus and other fifth-century writers through Herodotus and Thucydides to Xenophon and the fourth century BC. It will attempt to place the development of historiography in its intellectual, literary and historical context; emphasis will be placed on historical methodology, the presentation of historical causation, and the value of historiographical sources for writing the history of events and ideas.
