Planned timetable:
This module will examine the role of religious practice and belief in Greek society, from the sixth till the fourth century BC. It will look at a variety of different cults - from inter-state cults such as Delphi and Olympia, through the level of the polis to family religion - and at a range of different themes: the relationship of religion with politics and polis-ideology, the practice of divination, the belief in the afterlife (among many others). A particular emphasis will be laid on the examination of religious change, placing the sceptical ideas of the fifth century in the context of traditional religious conceptions.
