It will approach the subject from a broad chronological perspective stretching from the Archaic to the Late Roman periods, thus allowing long-term trends and developments to be followed through, such as the role and influence of mercenaries, the rise of military professionalism (with its impacts on art and literature) and the presentation of military status within societies..
