This module examines design, theory, and representation of European cities from the ¿fteenth through the eighteenth centuries and from London to St. Petersburg. Across these centuries and cities, a wide range of cultural historical factors reshaped conception and experience of the urban environment ¿ for instance, the rise of humanism and a renewed interest in Antiquity, intensi¿ed tourism, a stronger emphasis on sensory experience, and international political competition. We will consider how architects, artists, and patrons responded to these factors in designing and representing various buildings and spaces, including city gates, palaces, town halls, churches, and hospitals. Topics to be considered include: architectural manipulation of sensory experience, architecture as an expression of political authority, the relationship of city to country, forti¿ed cities, and modes of designing social reform.
