This module offers an examination of Scandinavian architecture and design between 1890 and 1960. Focusing on selected developments in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, it also highlights the significant relationship to German design theory and practice of the period. Beginning with a consideration of the legacy of National Romanticism the module moves on to explore architectural Expressionism, Nordic Classicism, and Scandinavia’s unique form of architectural modernism known as Functionalism or the Scandinavian synthesis. Examination of individual buildings and civic planning is combined with a focus on the importance of integrated design: furniture, fittings, household utensils, the relationship to the environment etc. Individuals studied include Martin Nyrop, Ragnar Ostberg, Eliel Saarinen, Kay Fisker, Alvar Aalto, and Arne Jacobsen.
Weekly contact: 1 x 2-hour lecture, 1 x 1-hour seminar (x 11 weeks), 2 x tutor's office hour (x 12 weeks), fieldtrip - 8 hours.
