The evolution of cities plays a key role in our understanding of the late antique period. No longer seen as destined to decline, urban settlements underwent important transformations during this period, in terms both of their physical fabric and outlook and their political and cultural definition. These changes are documented through a variety of archaeological, epigraphic, and written sources. This module will discuss these issues, providing an overview of current scholarly debates in the area.
