Planned timetable:
The module will cover significant areas of thinking about poetic language in a thematic way. Students will be introduced to general conceptions of poetic and literary language from structuralism, pragmatics and analytic philosophy. We will then move on to discuss theories of measure, figure, selection, equivalence, deviance and of poetic spirit. Emphasis will be placed on the linguistic and philosophical assumptions and objectives of the theorists studied. Students will be encouraged to continue asking what picture of language and what picture of poetry emerges from the texts studied. Theoretical discussion will be complemented by focused close reading sessions in which the class will test theory in practice. (Group E)
