This module is designed to allow students to acquaint themselves with some of the principal novels of the period 1720-1840 together with the social background from which they derive. It will show the development of the novel form from its earliest stages to its establishment as the dominant literary form in the nineteenth century. It forms part of the critical and historical study of literature available to students in the School and the Faculty. (Group C)

Weekly contact: 1 lecture, 1 seminar, and 2 optional consultative hours

As used by St Andrews: 2-hour Written Examination = 50%, Coursework = 50%

Intended learning outcomes

  • Display a direct knowledge of the full range of set texts for the module, gained by close reading of those texts and reading of supplementary material.
  • Identify and undertake appropriate secondary reading and other research, guided by the module handbook.
  • Deploy an appropriate vocabulary for describing the novel and the social, political and intellectual contexts it inhabits and informs.
  • Present accounts of and arguments about the set texts and other relevant material in considered responses to essay and examination questions.
