This module studies tangible and hands-on efforts to build sustainable, inclusive and just cities around the world. Reflecting on the convenor's field research in cities globally (including Athens, Rio de Janeiro and Durban) the module draws in particular on grassroots urban movements and their efforts to build community-led sustainability and inclusion beyond, and often despite official frameworks. The module focuses on the work of such community actors themselves, through their own voices and texts, which are brought in as tutorial discussion papers.

• Think of sustainable urban development critically, analytically and systematically across disciplinary perspectives;
• Develop competence in designing and delivering 'community briefings', i.e. community-oriented reports on urban sustainability.
• Develop competence in designing and presenting urban sustainability challenges to academic and non-academic audiences alike.
• Demonstrate a critical understanding of contemporary theories of urban sustainability.
• Demonstrate a critical understanding of new and emerging community-focused frameworks of understanding and practicing urban sustainability.
