This module explores the political, social and cultural history of the United States during the 1960s. While attention will be paid to the short but eventful presidency of John F. Kennedy and that of his successor Lyndon B. Johnson, as well as to the political career of his brother Robert, the module also covers many of the broader themes and issues from the period – including civil rights, youth culture and student politics, the women’s movement, the Vietnam War, conservatism, and the arts and culture. The module aims to assess both the significance of the Kennedy presidency and mystique during this period, and to evaluate the 1960s as a whole, considering whether the period deserves the high degree of attention and interest which it has received from scholars and from the wider public.
