ES3004   Processes and Products in Sedimentary Systems

Academic year(s): 2023-2024

Key information

SCOTCAT credits : 15

ECTS credits : 7

Level : SCQF level 9

Semester: 2

Planned timetable: To be arranged

This course focuses on key aspects of the physical, chemical and biological processes that shape Earth’s surface environments, both as they occur in the present and as archived in the sedimentary rock record. We will investigate fluid - sediment interactions, including erosion, deposition and bedform development. We will conduct a transect to explore the full spectrum of modern sedimentary environments from continental environments to deep-water, considering the processes that operate in each environment and the characteristics that enable them to be distinguished in the rock record. The practical components and field excursions will examine modern processes and sediments, as well as ancient sedimentary rocks.
