This module is designed to introduce students to the Argentine and Chilean avant-garde poetry of the interwar period through the work of three internationally acclaimed authors: Jorge Luis Borges (Fervor de Buenos Aires, 1923), Oliverio Girondo (Veinte poemas para ser leídos en el tranvía, 1922) and Vicente Huidobro (Altazor, 1931). Its aim is to examine the literary modernisms of Chile and Argentina, probing issues of cultural nationalism, 'Latin Americanness', aesthetic syncretism and urban space.
