Combining a theoretical framework with a number of case studies,this module will explore how the 'Russian literary canon' has been constructed over the past two hundred years. Students will have the opportunity to study a number of works by Russian writers now considered 'canonical' (e.g. Aleksandr Pushkin, Fedor Dostoevsky, Andrei Platonov, Liudmila Ulitskaia), in depth as well as to consider texts that have fallen outside the privileged field of the 'literary', whether for reasons of production, reception, distribution, or promotion. In addition, students will be encouraged to consider how various institutions create and perpetuate notions of canonicity. This module will be taught jointly by members of the Russian Department and will draw on their fields of expertise. It will also take into account the backgrounds of enrolled students. Students taking the module as part of the MLitt in Russian Studies will be expected to complete readings in the original.
