The module aims to introduce major aspects and dimensions of the question of cultural identity. Through the study of a broad range of particular cultural traditions, it seeks to enhance understanding of the concepts and mechanisms involved in the formation of collective identity as such (the 'poetics' of cultural identity). Particular topics treated may include: concepts of culture and identity; collective memory; icons of identity; historiography and myth; complex identities and cultural hybridity.

Learning and teaching methods and delivery

Weekly contact: 1-hour lecture and 1-2-hour seminar.
