This module offers an introduction to mythology as well as to gender studies through a variety of Latin texts, both poetry and prose. It will expand the students’ knowledge of Greek and Roman myths, and the understanding of their use in Latin literature and Roman culture. At the same time it will study the role and characterisation of mythical women in various genres, the evolution of their myths from Greece to Rome and the ways in which they are employed for literary, political and religious purposes in the Late Republic and Early Empire.
