First coming to prominence over the course of the thirteenth century, medieval German short stories were frequently humorous, at times grotesque tales filled with wayward children, bickering lovers, cross-dressing knights, cannibalism, and general mayhem. These fantastic and occasionally horrifying stories explore and problematize the anxieties of medieval culture, freely engaging and satirizing issues of class, morality, gender and religion. This module introduces students to the genre and its key topics, with a focus on some of the earliest masters of the short story form: Konrad von Würzburg, Wernher der Gärtner, and the poet known as der Stricker.
