It will examine continental texts, their early modern English translations, and English work influenced by them. Possible topics for discussion include: Petrarch's sonnets and their English imitators and adaptors; Ariosto's Orlando Furioso; the political writing of Machiavelli; theories of translation; and Castiglione's Libro del Cortegiano and its influence. All texts will be taught in English.
