This module will explore the art and architecture of the Ottoman Empire. Through an analysis of selected cities, monuments, and objects, students will cultivate a deeper under-standing of transformations in art and architecture during the Ottoman period from the 14th to the 20th centuries, and examine the cultural legacy of the Ottoman Empire in today's world. The connections between Ottoman art and architecture and contemporaneous developments in politics, religion, and culture are explored through a variety of topics, including architectural monuments, calligraphy, arts of the book, ceramics, textiles, and other forms of decorative art. It will also examine the impact of male and female patronage across diverse sectors of society (including: the royal family, the Ottoman court, the religious elite, mystical orders, and guilds) as a major contributing factor towards the shaping and development of Ottoman artistic and architecture traditions.
