This module centres on the study of Don Quijote, by Miguel de Cervantes, and its cultural and literary impact. It aims to provide a sound understanding of important modes of literary expression in Spain and Spanish America following the conflict of reality and illusion across the centuries. The syllabus involves the study of a selection of canonical texts from Spain and Spanish America, with most time spent on Cervantes's novel. The module examines how illusion cuts across literary, psychological and moral facets, including satire, parody, genre-mixing, and future interpretations such as the Romantic view of the novel or twentieth-century rewritings; modern characterisation and character development, and the creation of realistic figures in a fictional reality-based world; and the themes of good, evil, justice, the rights of the individual versus the collective, and the ability of fiction to benefit people or do them harm.
