This module provides students with a conceptual, normative, political and historical overview of genocide from a broad interdisciplinary perspective. Drawing upon contributions from political science, international relations, history, law, philosophy, psychology and sociology, the module explores the historical, legal, social and political facets of the concept of genocide and examines a range of empirical examples. Topics to be addressed include definitions of genocide; the evolving international law of genocide; themes of memory, responsibility and denial; colonialism, modernity, development and genocide; and theories of perpetration, complicity, and prevention.
