This theoretical module introduces key concepts in International Development Studies, providing a comprehensive overview of the field. It will engage participants with critical perspectives on the nature of development and development studies, as well as discussing international development strategies. The module will be taught in sections by academic staff from different disciplines, such as International Relations, Social Anthropology, Economics and Medicine. The course will follow 'The Companion to Development Studies' (Desai & Potter, 2013), with academic staff supplementing the core readings with material from their own fields. Key issues to be addressed include globalisation, rural development, gender, global health, violence, and government.
