The relationship between the sciences and the humanities is a fascinating area of studies. The continuous advancement and expansion of technology and science, that aimed to promote societal 'happiness' over the last two hundred years, has created tremendous opportunities for mobility, communication and wellbeing, eliciting enthusiastic responses as well as preoccupations across intellectual elites and society. This module will explore the interstice between the sciences and the humanities, two areas that traditionally belong by default to two discrete paradigms of knowledge. We will study themes such as life in the metropolis, the phenomenon of the 'crowd' and the effects it had on readership, the influences of medical sciences and technology on culture by reading works by authors such as G. Apollinaire (France), J. Ortega y Gasset (Spain), G. Simmel and E. Canetti (Germany), F. T. Marinetti (Italy).

Relationship to other modules

Pre-requisite(s): Permission of the Comparative Literature Honours Adviser. Before taking this module you must take CO2001 or take CO2002

Learning and teaching methods and delivery

Weekly contact: 1.5-hour lecture or seminar per week. 1-hour evening seminar 3-4 times in semester.
