This module is designed to build on the knowledge of Russian literature and culture acquired at sub-honours level, focussing in particular on texts from the period of the Russian Enlightenment. Students will study some of the most significant texts of eighteenth-century Russian literature (which may include Gavrila Derzhavin's poetry, Mikhailo Lomonosov's treatises, Denis Fonvizin's plays, the prose of Nikolai Karamzin and Alexander Radischev), as well as a number of historically significant non-fictional texts such as the private correspondence of Catherine the Great and her courtiers, travelogues and autobiographies. The module focusses on the culturally and historically specific patterns of the development of individual narrative voices in eighteenth-century Russia, examining the selected texts in the general context of the European Enlightenment. Independent reading and study will form a major element of the module.
