This module is designed to build on the knowledge of Russian literature and culture acquired at sub-honours level, focusing in particular on issues of gender. Some of the most important writers of the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-rst centuries will be studied (such as Ivan Turgenev, Nikolay Chernyshevsky, Isaac Babel, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Mikhail Bulgakov, Alexandr Solzhenitsyn), alongside women writers, more recently added to the canon (this may include works by Karolina Pavlova, Nadezhda Durova, Anna Akhmatova, Lyudmila Petrushevskaya). The module will explore how culturally specific Russian instantiations of ideas about femininity, masculinity and queerness interact with Western theories of gender and sexuality'. Focusing on both traditional and subversive representations of gender, students will examine their development from the mid-nineteenth century to present day. Independent reading and study will form a major element of the module.
