The module aims to broaden the students’ appreciation of classical studies by providing students with an introductory experience of the ‘tools of the Classicist’, i.e. the technical methodologies available for the advanced study of ancient Latin texts. These include in particular textual criticism, metre, historical and social linguistics, paleography, epigraphy and digital humanities. The module will also address theoretical issues related to these technical tools, such as their applicability and fallibility, and their current status within the discipline. Such issues will be considered from a historic perspective, and students will also be given an introductory knowledge of the history of classical philology.

Relationship to other modules

Pre-requisite(s): "40 credits from LT2001, LT2002, LT2003, LT2004, including one pass at 11 or better, or a pass in LT3018, or evidence of equivalent linguistic achievement."
