The module will explore the problematic relationship of women and culture in the early modern period by focussing on changes in the representation of the female in Italian literature in the course of the sixteenth century. Renaissance notions of the female self will be examined from differing perspectives, from the idealised forms of Petrachism to the disenchanted reality of the courtesans. Key themes, such as the reinterpretation of mythological figures and the self-representation of female writers will be considered, as well as the work of writers such as Stampa, Fonte and Tullia d'Aragona.
