This module traces the unique story of Shakespeare's role in German literary and cultural life from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Shakespeare is the external point of reference for Enlightenment debate, the iconoclastic example for irreverent Stümer und Dränger. Through the mature criticism and translation of the Classical-Romantic age, Shakespeare achieved national status as a symbol of the German spirit and this role was secured in 1864 with the founding of the world's oldest Shakespeare Society - in Weimar! Students will follow this evolving reception through a range of genres, such as critical essays, plays, and German Shakespeare translations. Authors include Lessing, Goethe, Schiller, Schlegel and Fontane, among others.
