Semester: 2
Planned timetable:
This module offers a new, intermedial perspective on a legendary - albeit still misunderstood - figure, Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798). The objective of this module is to go back to the sources of the myth by reading his memoirs (written in French): Histoire de ma vie. Through a critical and historiographical lens, we will analyse how and why he has been remembered as the epitome of the seducer. Whilst this module will duly inscribe Casanova within the eighteenth-century phenomenon of libertinage, our close study of his memoirs will also highlight that he was a man of the Enlightenment, with close connections to France and its culture. The first part of the semester will revolve around close readings of Casanova's memoirs. The second part of the semester will shift focus to look instead at later interpretations of Casanova's life across genres, centuries, and cultures, from Schnitzler's 1918 novel Casanova's Homecoming to Fellini's anti-homage film.
Pre-requisite(s): null. Before taking this module you must pass FR2202 or pass FR2022 or pass FR2032
