Using the theme of memory, this module traces the evolution of Roman imperial history from the successors of Augustus, via the Flavian, Antonine, and Severan dynasties, up to the end of the third century. Stressing continuity from the early Principate to the dawn of Late Antiquity, it examines the complex and multifaceted processes by which imperial dynasties were established and legitimised in the Roman world. From deifying predecessors or claiming spurious ancestors to emphasise political continuity, to attacking the legacies of overthrown emperors to construct a 'fresh start', this module will trace the ways in which imperial memories could be preserved, twisted, rejected, and reformed in new political realities.
