This module provides a broad survey of ancient Greek History from the Archaic period (c. 800 BC) to the reign of Alexander the Great, and looks at the political development of Athens and Sparta, the impact of the Athenian Empire, and Greek culture in its heyday. Alexander's conquest of the east and his fascinating personality are studied in detail. All sources are read in translation. The module will give a solid background in Greek History, and will touch on wider issues of the nature of democracy and political power, Mediterranean anthropology, and the image of the Greeks that has been invented by modern scholars.
